All you wanted to know about shotguns.

I purchased a new shotgun and decided to look up some info, then I realized we needed some of this info here for others to read as well. I will put up a chart showing the difference between chokes and ammunition.

First of all, let's talk about choke tubes. We have many different choke tubes available for shotguns with a multi choke tube system. A multi choke tube system means you can screw a choke tube into the end of the barrel to change the bore. For example, if the I.D. (inner diameter) of a shotgun barrel measures .729 inches and the choke tube's I.D. measures .694 inches then it is constricted (or choked) .035 inches which makes it a full choke. Here is a list of different standard choke tubes.

    GAUGES
    DESIGNATION 10/12/16/20 20/410
    Cylinder .000″ .000″
    Light Skeet .003″ .003″
    Skeet .005″ .005″
    Improved Skeet .007″ .007″
    Improved Cylinder .010″ .009″
    Light Modified .015″ .012″
    Modified .020″ .015″
    Improved Modified .025″ .018″
    Light Full .030″ .021″
    Full .035″ .024″
    Extra Full .040″ .027″
    Super Full .050″

Here is an example of how some of these pattern out.

Percentage Of Shot Inside 30″ Circle
    CHOKE 20 Yds 30 Yds 40 yds
    Cylinder 80% 60% 40%
    Skeet 92% 72% 50%
    Improved Cylinder 100% 77% 55%
    Modified 100% 83% 60%
    Improved Modified 100% 91% 65%
    Full 100% 100% 70%

How to tell the difference in choke tubes. ( I had to go in the safe for this one, I couldn't find any info on this hardly online so I am pretty sure this is right but don't quote me on it!)

Small cuts in the top of the choke tube represent the restriction.

    5 cuts equal cylinder
    4 cuts equal Improved cylinder
    3 cuts equal modified
    2 cuts equal Improved modified
    1 cut equals Full choke

(these are the only ones I know right now. If I can come up with others I will post as I find them)

    Now onto the loads.

    Number Of Pellets Per Ounce
    SHOT SIZE LEAD STEEL
    8 585 *
    7 1/2 410 *
    6 225 316
    5 170 243
    4 135 191
    2 87 125
    1 * 103
    BB 50 72
    BBB * 61
    T * 52
    F * 40

Shooting slugs in a shotgun is not recommended in any shotgun with constrictions. From what I have researched it says it can cause damage to the barrel and or receiver. I always heard that I.C. was safe to shoot slugs but now I am not for sure. Maybe someone who knows more than me can chyme in on this and let us know. Any other info anyone would like to add please do so, as I can't seem to think straight tonight.

The muzzle end of a .45 pretty much says \'go away\' in any language.

I don't carry a gun to go looking for trouble, I carry a gun in case trouble finds me.

45 ACP: Because a 9mm MIGHT expand, but a 45 will NEVER shrink!

Haven't hunted in a long long time but I do like a full choke for squirrel hunting. But I've man hunted a long time with open cylinder (no choke) with 00 buck, slug and sabot rounds, sabots being my favorite for most uses. Thanks for taking the time to get all that info and the layout looks good to me.

Yes, Thanks much for compiling and posting all that info. I had no idea the # of cuts in a choke meant anything; learned something today and it aint even noon!

fwiw, I've shot slugs in IC from many years and have not noticed any problem. Like you, I've always heard it was OK. Doing the math, .729 - .01(IC restriction) = .719 which will pass a .69 slug. So that all fits.

And either you've done some editing or the origional info was a work of art, because it looks great to me.

I took it to mean that he's a Pistol guy to the exclusion of SGs. You know; kinda like folks that think pistol development ceased in 1911.......
